Training and Internships

A day in the life of a Project SEARCH York Intern

Each day starts in a training room onsite at the Business, The City of Vaughan.  Students, or interns, learn a variety of employability skills and business specific training. Once internships start, the majority of the day is spent in worksite rotations developed throughout the departments. Interns end their day in the training room, reflecting on the day, journaling their key learning, problem solving, and planning.

Interns travel to the program sites  using typical adult transportation options such as York Region Transit (YRT) or walking to their placements.
Travel training is provided to interns as well as Presto Passes when traveling to internship sites. Interns are strongly encouraged to begin MyRide Travel Training prior to the start of the program.

Skills Trainers provide training to interns for each work experience, while site supervisors and managers will provide natural supports.  The YCDSB Instructor also supports onsite in the departments with weekly visits.

The ultimate goal is to support students to be successful in their post-graduation search for competitive employment, utilizing the skills learned on the work experiences and throughout the program. While we appreciate when it happens, host businesses/organizations are under no obligation to hire students once they have completed their Project SEARCH year.
